The dolls were goin' on road trips ~ workshops to see, artists to commune with and transformations to emerge through.
They needed a voice; the Travel Logs became a means of communicating their daunting experiences.
The Formationeers, too, had moments to share and procedural information to pass along.

Joyce's artist's jots about Oma Granny

Some times, you have an idea, and it just doesn't work.

When I met Granny, the first thing that popped into my mind was "fairy". I saw her with wings. Big, bright, colorful wings!
So that's the direction I went in.
It didn't work.

Oh, the wings worked, but I just couldn't wrap my mind around mounting them and leaving the next artist an opportunity to dress Granny. So here are the pictures of "Oh that's what I want to do, but it ain't happening".

I also wanted to make a magic wand with the artist palette that was in her hand…that didn't happen either.

That is why granny was in the box for two weeks…I was creating, it just wasn't working. I finally gave in and dressed the doll. It actually was kinda cool once I gave in…It's not what I wanted to do, but it was the necessary next step.
This is an issue I have to face with my own work;
sometimes the necessary steps have to take place before the special effects can happen.
I started to run with the gardening theme. And like any good garden left untended, I started to run wild!

I thought about the colors and smells of nature and look what happened. I stitched silk Ivy leaves to the body for stockings. I think they're really cool. They are sort of Peter Panish in a "Bob Mackie" kind of way.

I decided to dye the white roses with Kool-Aid, first to see if it would work and second because I am doing a children's art project this month and needed to have the Kool-Aid anyway. Sometimes practical has it's advantages. The roses dyed, stitched into place with beads and suddenly Granny starts to look "Retro"! I wonder if she was a "Flower Child" in the 60's? I gave her vibrant beaded sleeves to complete the dress and added rhinestones to her glasses for a totally cool new look.

I decided to stop here.

I could have embellished the hat, but I didn't.

I could have added jewelry, a purse and shoes, but I didn't.

I really wanted to add the wings…but I didn't.

Maybe somebody else will!
